AI and Evolving Digital Tech In the Education Setting
I have found in my math settings that Artificial Intelligence and evolving educational technologies seem to offer a variety of benefits, but also an interesting and evolving ethical dilemma.
Benefits:
• AI-assisted tools like Kuda allow other educators and me to spend less time on simple tasks, which allows us to divert more of our attention and energy towards our next goal.
• AI-assisted tools also benefit students with tools such as Calc Chat and Calc View. These are websites offered via our textbooks, and they provide students with real-time feedback and even lessons.
Ethical Dilemma:
There is a large issue right now amongst young learners, and that's that many students can't tell when they are using AI as a tool and when AI is doing their thinking for them. I have run into this very issue with my students, where they will say they used AI to study for a test instead of doing the review, and then they fail to understand why they may not have done well. There is a difference between reading what AI tells you on a screen and actively applying and practicing a math skill. It's easy for students to get this mixed up because of how convenient AI can feel in their day-to-day lives.
That's why, as educators, we have a moral and ethical duty to not only teach our content, but also about how to ethically utilize AI, and recognize when AI does more harm than good.
